Coimbatore Jan. 22 The Southern India Mills' Association (SIMA) is joining hands with the Textile Machinery Manufacturers Association (TMMA) to stage for the first time an exclusive textile machinery exhibition, Texpo 2007, in July. The Coimbatore-based textile apex body has chosen to hold the fair here, which according to the SIMA/TMMA office-bearers, will throw up opportunity for a large number of middle-level executives/shop-floor technical personnel employed in the South-based textile units to visit a full-fledged show and witness the latest machines.

Hitherto, only major metros like Mumbai or Delhi had been playing hosts to national/international level technology expos in textile and this deterred the South-based textile industry sending large contingents of business delegation to upcountry fairs.

Texpo 2007 is scheduled to be held between July 26 and 30 which will normally be the time for textile entrepreneurs to consider capital goods/inventory planning.

Unveiling the proposal at a press conference here on Monday, the SIMA Chairman, Mr S.V. Arumugam, said the Indian textile sector is collectively projected to invest Rs 1.94 lakh crore in capacity building by 2012. Of this, mills in the South accounting for a close 50 per cent share in the country's spindle capacity, will grab at least 40 per cent of 11th Plan investment volume, thus benefiting the capital equipment manufacturers.

Going by the fast pace of technology upgradation happening in the region, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh are expected to see about $25-billion investment in textile machinery (from spinning up to garmenting) during the next five years.

Dr Srinivasan, Vice-Chairman, SIMA, who is also the Chairman of Texpo 2007, said SIMA-TMMA wants to hold the fair in Coimbatore as it houses a large number of textile machinery user industry and a good many number of textile machinery manufacturing units are operating in the region. This would encourage large number of small-scale machinery producers.
