Pune Jan. 22 The first modern cyber crime investigation lab has been set up in Pune by the Pune Police in association with Nasscom. The lab, functioning since January 2007, was formally inaugurated by Dr P.S. Pasricha, Director-General of Police, Maharashtra. Mr Nandkumar Saravade, Director, Cyber Security and Compliance, Nasscom, noted that Pune cyber lab was the fourth in the country and these cyber labs across these cities were expected to train more than 3,000 law enforcement officials annually on cyber crime investigation techniques and provide ongoing technical support for investigations as well.

Set-up on a public-private partnership model, the lab would function as a regional hub and undertake training and investigation in Pune and adjoining cities of Solapur, Nasik and Aurangabad, in addition to the neighbouring districts of Maharashtra, he said. Pune Cyber Lab would act as a focal point and a resource centre for training and technical support for both Pune Police officers and others in cyber crime investigation.

Cyber Training

The cyber lab has one project administrator from Pune Police, a full-time project manager, two instructors from Nasscom and part-time volunteers from the information security and student community. The training includes familiarisation on areas such as Internet, browsing, e-mail, mobile telephony, e-commerce and online banking among others and education on what constitutes cyber crime.

Once trained, these law enforcement officials would carry out various activities such as analysing and scrutinising data on digital media, e-mail tracking, extracting evidence using forensic tools, and on understanding cyber crime-related legislation, he said. The other cyber training labs are located in Mumbai, Thane and Bangalore for training police officers in cyber crime investigation.

Generating Awareness

He noted that Mumbai lab has provided training to 976 police officers from March 2004 to December 2006, Thane lab has trained 648 investigators from August 2005 to December 2006. In addition, 483 police officers have also been trained through programs/workshops conducted at Pune, Nasik, Jammu, Gurgaon, West Bengal, Aurangabad, Nagpur, Goa, Bhopal and Indore.

He noted that Nasscom has been generating awareness among consumers on cyber crimes through Cyber Safety Weeks, an annual event in Mumbai since 2003 every year and extended to Hyderabad in 2006. It will be extended to more States in 2007, he added.
