Maharashtra's Revenue Minister, Mr Narayan Rane, has asked the Konkan Agriculture University at Dapoli to undertake a study of the possible adverse impact of carbon emissions from the upcoming ultra mega power project at Girye on the local mango crop, according to State Government spokesperson.
Mr Rane chaired a meeting with local resident of Griye village and surrounding areas on Tuesday in order to clear their apprehension about the mega project.
The residents have voiced their concern over the possible impact of carbon emissions on the local mango crop and fish yield in the area.
Girye site in Sindhudurg district of Maharashtra was identified based on the report submitted by National Remote Sensing Agency, Hyderabad in consultation with the Maharashtra Government as one of the potential site for development of coastal mega power project of 4,000 MW. The world famous Alphonso mango is grown in the district of Sindhudurg and adjacent Ratnagiri district.
In Maharashtra, the turnover of mango business is about Rs 600 crore. Mr Rane said that the project would not affect the local livelihood, as the carbon emissions in the area would be within the tolerable limit. He pointed out that the project would bring an investment of Rs 20,000 crore, provide direct employment to 4,000 and indirect employment to 1,000. The power project was necessary as two SEZs and an entertainment park were planned for region, he said.
The 4,000-MW ultra mega power project has attracted the attention of 22 Indian and overseas power companies. They have submitted their expressions of interest to the Union Power Ministry.
