The Hindu Business Line : Kochi port row: Chamber calls for intervention

Kochi Jan. 23 The Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry has requested the State Labour and Industries Ministers to intervene in the labour row in the Cochin Port Trust to restore normalcy in port operations.

Headload workers are protesting against alleged irregularities in the pool system implemented as part of the new labour reforms, affecting movement of cargo at the port.

The Chamber President, Mr K. Retnan, in a statement issued here said that the efforts taken by the Labour and Industries Ministers to create a congenial atmosphere at Willingdon Island for the smooth functioning of port operations had given the impression that Kochi would become a sought after port on the west coast.

However, the subsequent developments in the last two days in the port area is causing difficulties to the exim trade and also dampened the enthusiasm of all concerned.

If the situation is allowed to continue, the Chamber president said, it would jeopardise the concerted efforts of various sections connected with exim trade aimed at attracting more cargo traffic through the port.

Nobody should be allowed to indulge in activities that would tarnish the image of the port, he added.
