Visakhapatnam, Jan. 23

Flights to, and from, Visakhapatnam airport remain cancelled due to poor visibility caused by smog and other adverse weather conditions, causing immense hardship to air travellers. There were no flights on Tuesday for the fourth day. According to the weather bureau, the adverse weather conditions may continue for two days or more. There is no instrument landing system in the airport and, according to Mr H.S Suresh, project manager of the Airports Authority of India, the work on the ILS is being expedited to make it operational by mid-February. In an appeal to Mr Praful Patel, Union Civil Aviation Minister, Mr N. Janardhana Reddy, Member of Parliament, has urged to expedite the procedures for getting the newly-laid runway declared open and also to get the ILS operational soon.
