Trade & Labour Unions `Go-slow' affects Kochi port operations Our Bureau
The workers are apprehensive that the introduction of the pool system would curtail their job opportunities.
The workers were protesting against irregularities in pool system implemented in the port as part of the new labour reforms introduced by the Port Management since January 1. The workers were apprehensive that the introduction of the pool system would curtail their job opportunities.
Seeking cooperation
However, the operations in the container terminal and oil tanker berths have not been affected due to the `go-slow' resorted to by head load workers. Though these incidents have not affected activities of the Port much, officials pointed out that continuance of such interruption of work would adversely affect the cargo movements. Meanwhile, the Port Trust authorities requested all labourers to cooperate with the initiatives taken by the State Government and the port management to avoid inconvenience to the industry. They were also requested not to indulge in illegal stoppage of work and come forward for discussion with the authorities concerned in case of any clarification.
New reforms
The port officials clarified that the new labour reforms had been introduced after making concerted efforts to eradicate the menace of forcible and unauthorised collection of money in the Port area. The State Government had introduced the system for engaging labourers in various port related activities through the Kerala Headload Workers Welfare Board and they are booked accordingly since January 11.
