Hyderabad Jan. 23 A senior spine specialist from Venezuela has claimed that a new surgical intervention for degenerative disc (spinal) disorders has proved to be beneficial and cheaper.

Dr Guillermo Bajares, Director of Caracas Spine Institute of Venezuela, said the present method (fusion surgery) involved removal of the degenerated disc that caused pain and immobilising the segment by welding adjacent bony vertebrae. But it resulted in lost motion in that segment. The new therapy protects the rhythm of the spine, ensuring its normal movement.

Developed by Medtronic, the system is cheaper. Dr Bajares was here to introduce the system to a group of neurology surgeons.
