Education Government - Policy Cabinet nod for 5 pharma institutes Our Bureau
The NIPER Act, which was passed by the Government to establish the institute offering graduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes for pharmacy, had provision only for one `institute of national importance', which was established at Mohali, Punjab. The proposal for the five new NIPER-like institutes, which the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers hopes to establish, was expected to come up only in the Budget Session. The ordinance now allows the Ministry to start admission for the current academic year for postgraduate courses.
To be established at a cost of Rs 200 crore each, these institutes are expected to serve the crucial shortage predicted in human resources for the booming pharmaceuticals and clinical research sectors.
Five States Gujarat, Assam, Bihar, West Bengal and Andhra Pradesh have offered 100 acres each. And although the infrastructure will not be ready when the ordinance gets Presidential assent, the Ministry hopes to start classes in July in borrowed classrooms in other State institutes.
