Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) today announced that it has won a turnkey contract from Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) to set up two 500 MW units at Mejia thermal power station in West Bengal. The project, to be commissioned during the Eleventh Plan (2007-2012), would add around 24 million units every day to the grid on commissioning. A major portion of this would be transmitted to Delhi for the Commonwealth Games in 2010, a BHEL release said. The work would include manufacture, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of steam turbines, generators, boilers, associated auxiliaries, electricals, besides controls and instrumentations, switchyard and civil works.

BHEL is investing over Rs 1,200 crore for modernisation and capacity expansion of its facilities from the current 6,000 MW per annum to 10,000 MW per annum, the release said, adding that the company is looking at further increasing its manufacturing capacity to 15,000 MW.
