Kochi Feb. 5 Based on the positive response that it was able to generate from the Demotex International Trade Fair held in Germany, the Kerala State Coir Corporation has firmed up plans to commence coir exports to Germany, Italy, Austria and the UAE.

The environment-friendly coir products have a growing demand in the markets of developed countries, said Mr G. Venugopal, Chairman of the Corporation. Coco-peat, which is manufactured from coir waste, is able to retain moisture for longer time and is finding a growing market in the Gulf countries. The UAE has already ordered for 35 containers of coco-peat from the corporation, which is over and above the orders for regular coir products.

The corporation is in the final stages of negotiation for opening a showroom in the UAE. The marketing strategy to be adopted for coir exports would be `Golden threads from God's Own Country.'

The corporation is helping in implementing the UNIDO-sponsored programme to reduce the environmental impact from the waste products of coconut in the Lakshadweep islands. The first stage of the project involves production of natural coconut oil and oil cake.

The second stage involves production of organic fertiliser, production of mattresses and other products from other coconut wastes. In order to increase the reach for coir, the corporation, which has 21 showrooms in the country, is planning to expand its network and start more showrooms.
