New Delhi Feb. 6 The merger of Air India and Indian is set to move ahead next week with a meeting of the empowered group of ministers set up to facilitate the process scheduled for February 12.

The GoM meeting is being held after the Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr Praful Patel, met with the unions of the two airlines to get their views and clear any apprehensions that they may have on the proposed merger.

The GoM is headed by the Minister for External Affairs, Mr Pranab Mukherjee, and includes the Ministers for Civil Aviation, Finance, Law and Company Affairs. Official sources indicated that the merger was on track, although a definite date for the process to get under way would emerge only after the Union Cabinet gives its nod.

The merger has already been given the go ahead by the Committee of Secretaries, which was entrusted the task of looking into various issues, including those relating to taxes and employees.

The Government has assured the employees that there would be no retrenchment and their wages would be protected when the merger gets under way.
