Thiruvananthapuram Feb. 11 As part of its effort to promote cultural tourism, Kerala Tourism will offer tourists an annual cultural calendar, said the State Tourism Minister, Mr Kodiyeri Balakrishnan.

Inaugurating a two-day seminar on ethnic tourism at the Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies in the city, he said that the Tourism and Culture Departments of the State would work together to promote cultural tourism.

Cultural tour packages are also being developed, he added.

ETHNIC TOURISM

Emphasising that responsible tourism will be the cornerstone of Kerala's tourism policy, the Minister said that he expects ethnic tourism to emerge as an important aspect of tourism development in the State.

Mr Sudhir Sahi, National Consultant to the UNDP-supported Endogenous Tourism Project, said that ethnic tourism appeals to those tourists who really want to learn. In ethnic tourism, the focus is not on numbers, he added.

India's rural tourism project is intended to support rural livelihoods through tourism based on rural community art and crafts and natural environmental assets, he said.
