New Delhi Feb. 16 NYSE listed Alcatel-Lucent and ITI, telecom equipment manufacturing company announced a contract to supply and install two million lines for Mahanagar Telephone Nigam ltd (MTNL) based on advanced wireless communication technology.

The multi-million euro contract covers the expansion of MTNL's radio access and next-generation core network in Mumbai. The technology provided through the contract would enable MTNL to increase its customer base and deliver high quality voice and communication services to its subscribers in Mumbai, stated a company release here. This would be based on the company's GSM/EDGE and W-CDMA/ HSPA technologies. MTNL expects to begin commercially offering these services later this year.

Alcatel-Lucent has more than 170 GSM/EDGE customers in more than 90 countries and has deployed commercial 3G systems for more than 70 operators worldwide.
