Chennai Feb . 21 Chennai-based IT products company Novatium Solutions Private Ltd is looking at a pan India presence with about 30,000 subscribers for its network computer over the next year.

"We are in talks with all leading telecom and data cable operators to provide Internet and server connectivity to users," said Mr Nisheeth Mishra, Vice-President, Enterprise and Education Business, Novatium, without sharing details of the investment involved.

A network computer is an intelligent computer designed on the lines of `thin computing' and has a server-centric architecture. All computing and storage of data is done at the server while the user end only has an input device (keyboard/ mouse), a display device (a screen/monitor) and a `smart box' or device that connects the user through a data cable or telephone line to the server.

Novatium's `Nova netPC' home user package comes for Rs 4,999 in addition to a monthly subscription starting at Rs 450, including a 30-hour Internet access. The company started pilot testing the product in Chennai in September last year and has 100 subscribers so far, including 30 enterprise clients. It tied up with a local cable operator for this service.

The netPC is designed differently from a conventional computer and uses digital signal processors in the place of microprocessors. Novartium has tie-ups with original equipment manufacturers to source components to fit its product design. Sun Microsystems provides servers, Microsoft the software and Midas Communication Technologies provides network switches.
