CPI opposes power PSUs divestment

Our Bureau

New Delhi, Feb. 24

The Communist Party of India (CPI) will oppose the disinvestment initiatives of the Union Government announced recently in the three power public sector units — Rural Electric Corporation, Power Grid Corporation of India and National Hydroelectric Power Corporation. "

Our party is not in favour of the sale of Government's stake in these power companies and we will oppose the disinvestments," said Mr Gurudas Das Gupta, the CPI leader in the Lok Sabha.

Mr Das Gupta also wanted the Finance Minister to take immediate steps to check price rise by procuring foodgrain from the open market and disallowing forward trading. However, Mr Das Gupta categorically ruled out pulling out of the UPA Government before the expiry of its five-year term. "We will support the Government for the remaining of the term. The people will be able to see what the Government has not been able to do in the five years," said Mr Das Gupta.
