The group has adopted Kizhakkumchery and Vadakkumchery panchayats for providing basic amenities on a sustainable basis in sectors such as health, education, water supply and employment. Mr P. N. C. Menon, Chairman of Sobha Group, said that he had formed a trust by name Sri Kurumba Trust to execute these projects and has earmarked Rs 600 crore, including Rs 300 crore as corporate fund for implementing these social responsibility projects in the twin villages.
Social work
Sobha Hermitage is one of the social activities of the Trust, which offers quality living in the most desired ambience for senior citizens. Built at a cost of Rs 12 crore, the hermitage offers facilities of a star hotel. All the employees are recruited locally, Mr Menon pointed out. He pointed out that the Trust has recently opened a primary health care facility Sobha Health Care near the hermitage. It has facilities like ultra sound scanning, X-ray, pathology, ECG etc. The health care facility caters to the primary health care needs of the two panchayats. There are also plans to construct a 75-bed multi speciality hospital mainly for the benefit of villagers and the poor, he said. Besides, an English medium school with world-class amenities is also coming up on 24 acres of land owned by the Trust. The Sobha Academy under the ICSE syllabus would cater to the educational needs of about 1,300 poor students in the two panchayats free of cost, which includes food. The school will start functioning from June 1 and the students would be provided with world-class education up to 10th standard, Mr Menon added.
More facilities
A state-of-the-art crèche with all sophisticated facilities would also be functional to address the day care needs of the wards of the locals. The Trust also plans to set up a garment manufacturing unit and group farming to provide employment. Modern machinery for farming and rain water harvesting through scientific and sustainable harvesting methods would be the key, he stated. According to Mr Menon, 12 acres of land has already been acquired for the garment unit and the production would commence in two years. The group would also buy back 100 per cent of the products for export purposes.
