Hyderabad Feb. 25 Worried over increasing piracy, the Motion Picture Association (MPA), in association with AP Film Chamber of Commerce, has begun a programme aimed at improving awareness and equipping with necessary inputs to law-enforcing agencies.

The MPA conducted a seminar for public prosecutors, magistrates and police officials here on Saturday, focussing on a variety of issues related to piracy that was estimated to cause a loss of Rs 1,700 annually in the country.

"It is clear that arrests, prosecutions and significant custodial sentences are necessary in order to create a real deterrent to this criminal activity that so badly damages local economies," Mr Mike Ellis, Senior Vice-President and Regional Director (Asia-Pacific) of MPA, said.

Col. Anil Nayer, Head (Operations), said the MPA's move was to provide insights into the problem to law-enforcement authorities and build a strong and well-coordinated team to fight the menace.

In 2005, the MPA's operations in the Asia-Pacific region investigated more than 34,000 cases of piracy and assisted law enforcement officials in conducting more than 10,500 raids.

These activities resulted in the seizure of more than 34 million illegal optical discs, 55 factory optical disc production lines and 3,362 optical disc burners, as well as the initiation of more than 8,000 legal actions.
