Mangalore Feb. 25 The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK) here is planning to start six new postgraduate (PG) programmes from the academic year 2007-08.

Speaking at the fourth convocation of NITK here on Saturday, Prof Sandeep Sancheti, NITK Director, said that the institute is planning to start M.Tech courses in construction management; rock mechanism and ground control; industrial biotechnology; and information security from the academic year 2007-08. An MBA course and M.Sc in chemistry are also planned for the next academic year.

New projects

The institute is embarking on new projects like a mega hostel with 1,250 seats at an estimated cost of Rs 55 crore, a new international students' hostel with a capacity of 310 students at a cost of Rs 20 crore, vehicular underpass connecting eastern side of the campus with the western side at a cost of Rs 11 crore, and various projects concerning water, electricity, water harvesting and solid waste management at a cost of Rs 10 crore.

Improvements have been made to health care centre, class III quarters, international students' hostel, playgrounds and beach road at a cost of Rs 11.75 crore.

Finishing school

Prof Sancheti said that NITK has been chosen as one among eight national institutes to start a Finishing School of three-month duration from the ensuing summer break to produce specialist manpower in information technology (IT). To start with, a batch of 100 students from all disciplines of engineering would be inducted to increase their employability in the fast-growing IT sector. Several major IT players are supporting this initiative, he said.

Collaborations

The institute has made significant progress by initiating moves for joint activity with institutions outside India.
