Opinion - Letters
Positive fare

By presenting the Rail Budget he did, the Railways Minister, Mr Lalu Prasad, has proved that he is as politically astute as he is a good manager.

The slew of schemes he has announced to enhance passenger amenities right from ticketing to travel should gladden the hearts of the travelling public. Coupled with the reduction in passenger fares, the amenities to be provided in 300 model stations and the announcement that 2007 will be observed as a `Year of Cleanliness', passengers may find the rail travel more comfortable.

Industry can expect a bonanza from the massive investments planned by the Railways across-the-board.

It will especially welcome the proposal to run triple-stack containers on diesel-hauled routes and double-stack containers on electrified sectors as also the thrust to be given to the construction of Dedicated Freight Corridors through public-private-partnership.

Mr Lalu Prasad seems to be readying to take on low-cost airlines and the road sector at once and head-on.
