In view of the series of terrorist strikes on trains, the Rail Budget for 2007-08 proposes to strengthen the security systems substantially. The various steps suggested in the Budget proposals include filling up of 8,000 vacant posts in the Railway Protection Force (RPF). The Budget also proposes to increase the number of trained dogs in the dog squads by buying new dogs.

It also proposes to have in place explosive detection devices, door frames and handheld metal detectors, and installation of close circuit televisions and smart video cameras at sensitive stations. For Mumbai, suburban services an integrated extensive security and surveillance system would be developed. The plans also include extensive training for existing RPF personnel.
