The Government and the CII will try to bridge the huge gap in skill sets by mooting an IT Academy.
STRATEGY FOR GROWTH: (From left) The Coimbatore Collector, Mr Neeraj Mittal, the Chairman of CII (Tamil Nadu), Mr Sanjay Jayavarthanavelu, the Information and Technology Secretary, Dr C. Chandramouli, the Chairman of Connect 2007, Mr Gopal Srinivasan, and the Managing Director of ELCOT, Mr C. Umashankar, at the `Connect Coimbatore 2007', an annual IT event organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry, in Coimbatore on Tuesday. - K.Ananthan
Delivering the keynote address at the seventh edition of the annual IT event, Connect Coimbatore 2007, he said, "with international companies zeroing in on Tamil Nadu for various reasons, the State would see its best during the second half of 2007. The Big Four have already established their presence in the State, but the future would show the growth path with new players setting foot here.'' The growing Indian market for electronics products at over 30 per cent has attracted global players such as Nokia and Flextronics here. "The Government is keen on an inclusive growth path. Its intent is to take the engines of growth both industrial and IT across various geographies, to give the entire eco system a boost and ensure widespread growth,'' he added. While stating that the Government would strive to achieve the growth target (30 per cent higher than the last year's software services export growth of Rs 14,115 crore), Dr Chandramouli said the hindering factor is in identifying right, skilled talent. "The Government and the CII will try to bridge the huge gap in skill sets by mooting an IT Academy. The IT Task Force formed under the Chairmanship of the State Chief Minister is working on this."
Nasscom initiative
The National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom) has also made certain initiatives by collaborating with the Government and industry stakeholders to further enhance the availability and access to suitable talent in the IT and ITES space. While the Nasscom Assessment of Competence has been nationally rolled out, after a successful pilot in November last, a comprehensive skill assessment and certification programme for entry level talent and executives is underway, the Secretary said. Later, talking to presspersons about the talent creation exercise that is being undertaken at present, Dr Chandramouli said the establishment of language labs at the school level is an effort of the education department. The industries department is working with the education department for updating the curriculum and help students be industry-ready even at the school level. On the Coimbatore IT Park project, he said that the architects have been shortlisted. "We expect the structure to be ready in a year's time.''
