`Support for dairy industry insignificant'

Chennai, Feb. 28

The support announced to the dairy industry in the Budget is insignificant, according to Mr R.G. Chandramogan, Chairman and Managing Director, Hatsun Agro Product Ltd.

Mr Chandramogan, who heads the largest private sector dairy in India, felt that the special programme to provide Rs 153 crore for high yielding milch animals was a minor sop for the dairy farmers. The dairy industry accounts for 5 per cent of the GDP, a fifth of that contributed by agriculture. For an industry with an output of over 100 million tonnes, a support of Rs 153 crore would not have any impact, he said. Dairy industry has taken a back seat despite the potential it holds for rural development, he added. Agriculture growth is pegged at about 2-3 per cent against more than 11 per cent by the other sectors. This would only mean that agriculture's contribution to GDP would shrink in the next five years to 14-15 per cent from the current 21 per cent, he observed.
