Telecommunications Mobile access for all in a year's time Thomas K Thomas
New Delhi March 13 In about a year's time every single person in the country will have access to cellular phones. While currently cellular networks cover about 60 per cent of the over one billion population, the proposed Universal Services Obligation project will cover another 270 million people with the help of 7,871 towers across 2.5-lakh villages that has not had any telecommunication facilities till now. The project, which is spread across 497 districts in 27 States, will also expand the geographical coverage of telecom services by about 20 per cent. Cellular operators currently cover 39 per cent of the country in terms of physical area.
Mobile Services
The project envisages three operators for each district, who are expected to set up the infrastructure within 12 months. So people living in villages such as Henry Island in the Andamans and Chingraliang in Arunachal Pradesh will soon have access to mobile services. Some of these villages have just one household inhabited by just one person. Overall, the project will cover 50 million households. Uttar Pradesh with 38,763 villages under the project is the biggest beneficiary followed by Madhya Pradesh. The current rural teledensity is about 1.84 per cent compared with urban teledensity of 49.53 per cent.
