Pyramid Saimira to join retail bandwagon

M. Ramesh

Chennai March 14 The next time you go to a movie, you might be able to pick up groceries for home at the theatre, have a hearty meal and also check for a match for your daughter's horoscope.

With some 24 lakh sq. ft of surplus space ("more than Pantaloon's") in its 270-odd movie theatres, the question that Pyramid Saimira is asking itself is, "why not I become the largest retailing company in India." The Chennai-based Pyramid Saimira is owner of a 270-strong movie theatre chain.

At first, the connection between a movie theatre and a retailing outfit is not clearly evident. After all, you wouldn't go to a multiplex to buy provisions for home or clothes for your kids.

"Wait and see," says Mr P.S. Saminathan, Managing Director, Pyramid Saimira. The company's retail foray may be in a little-known town called Pollachi, which lies among the hills of western Tamil Nadu. Coming up at the town's landmark Om Prakash theatre, are a 12,000 sq. ft super market and a 9,000 sq ft food court.

Pyramid Saimira is in talks with a number of retailers, some of whom would put up their shops in Pyramid's theatres.

One of them is certainly Moser Baer, which will sell DVDs at Pyramid's theatres. Another is Kalyana Malai, the marriage broking firm, which will put up offices in the theatres.
