DD to launch mobile TV soon

Our Bureau

New Delhi March 24 Doordarshan will be launching its mobile TV service in a few months, said Mr B.S. Lalli, CEO Prasar Bharati. Currently running trials with Nokia on the DVB-H platform, DD hopes to make the offering handset free. It is also looking at other mobile handset manufacturers, offering the service on the same platform.

These include LG, Samsung and Ericsson. However, he said the service would only be viable when other channels also offer the service. Prasar Bharati hopes to launch the service with four channels but hopes to offer 10 to 15 when it is fully commercial.

However, Mr Lalli pointed out that the cost of the handset at Rs 32,000 may not help the service to take off easily. He was hopeful of seeing the handset price brought down to Rs 18,000 and Rs 6,000 soon after that.
