Price option in Rs 12,000-Rs 14,000 range; sub-10K PC to stay

Chennai March 24 HCL Infosystems expects to introduce shortly a personal computer priced between Rs 12,000 and Rs 14,000.

The company had launched in 2005 a PC at a price of Rs 9,990 (sub-10K PC), but could not sustain the price point because of the fluctuation in rupee-dollar exchange rates, Mr Ajai Chowdhry, Chairman and CEO of HCL Infosystems, told Business Line recently.

"Two months after thelaunch, we had to hike prices by 5-10 per cent as component costs were going up," he said.

"As a result, the `sub-10K PC' was being sold at close to Rs 12,000.

Now, the company proposes to introduce a `more powerful' personal computer, which will be priced between Rs 12,000 and Rs 14,000.

Mr Chowdhry did not elaborate what functionalities this new PC would have, but only said it would be "more powerful" than the sub-10K model.

The sub-10K PC has a 1 GHz Processor, 128 MB RAM, 40 GB Hard Disk, 15" Digital Color Monitor, 52X Optical Drive, Keyboard and a scroll mouse.

The company, however, does not plan to phase-out production of the sub-10K PC. "The sub-10K PC has a market. The new PC will only provide more variety to the consumer. We are working with vendors to make sure both these products can co-exist," he said.

The company is also in the process of implementing the global ROHS (restriction of use of hazardous substances — such as lead, cadmium and mercury — in electrical and electronic equipment) directive for all its products.

It recently launched a range ROHS certified laptops and expects all other products to be ROHS compliant in three years.
