Higher offerings at Coimbatore tea auction

Our Bureau

Coimbatore March 26 Total offerings touched a high of 6.55 lakh kg at the Coimbatore tea auction on Friday. Leaf grades totalled 2.71 lakh kg and the rest was of the dust.

The Orthodox leaf grades witnessed selective demand. Well-made Nilgiris teas quoted lower by Rs 3 to Rs 4 a kg, others suffered withdrawals. CIS exporters operated albeit selectively.

Limited quantities of Orthodox dust were picked at irregular levels. This counter too witnessed withdrawals.

Less demand

There was less demand for the CTC leaf. Selected brighter liquoring teas saw some demand the rest remained barely steady. There were export enquiries for the medium/plainer bolder grades, but were quoting Rs 2 lower. Many lots were taken out with low bids. Internal buyers extended support on smaller brokens and fannings at market level. Exporters remained selective.

There was fair demand for the CTC dust grades. Selected high priced popular marks were dearer by Re 1 while others sold around last. Better medium varieties ruled firm, others irregular and lower up to Re 1 a kg. AVT and Indco operated on good liquoring teas. There were some export enquiries for the medium bolder dusts.

The Orthodox highgrowns ranged between Rs 70 and Rs 75 a kg, while the best CTC dusts ranged between Rs 59 and Rs 66.
