NGOs to organise Rice Week

Thiruvananthapuram March 26 A group of non-governmental organisations is organising `The week of rice action' from March 28 to April 4. The event, facilitated by Pesticide Action Network Asia-Pacific, is intended to celebrate the culture of rice in the Asia-Pacific region, said a spokesperson for Thanal, a city-based NGO that is participating in the event.

Fifteen countries, including India, will be covered by the event.

IN 4 STATES

In India, `The Week of Rice Action' will cover four States - Karnataka, Kerala, West Bengal and Orissa. The Indian events will focus on issues such as opposing genetically engineered rice, conversion of paddy fields for other uses and celebrating India's culture of rice.

While a national event will be held in Bhubaneswar on April 4, `The Week of Rice Action' will also include events in Belthangady, Karnataka, on March 27; Palakkad in Kerala on March 29; and Atgorah village, West Bengal on April 2.
