The US Environment Protection Agency (EPA) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) have entered into an agreement to share information of Climate Leaders Programme, an eco-protection initiative being implemented in the US currently.
This was announced during the visit of Mr Stephen L. Johnson, Administrator of EPA, to CII Green Business Centre here on Friday.
EPA's Climate Leadership Programme roped in over 100 corporates for voluntary effort in reducing the greenhouse gas emissions. "This has resulted in reduction of about eight per cent of total greenhouse emissions in the US and energy cost savings to the tune of $15 billion during last year, among others," Mr Johnson said.
He said clean environment would have a vast positive impact on economy and quality of life.
When asked about EPA's priorities in India and other developing nations, Mr Johnson said: "We want to focus on clean air, affordable energy, safe and clean water, a community's role in eco protection. Our priority is also to ensure that EPA remains a world leader in environment protection." On emerging ecological threats like cyber waste, Mr Stephen said efforts were on to increase the element of recycling in the IT industry.
Mr G. Vivekanand, Chairman of CII (AP), said the pact with EPA would help CII in conducting its recently launched Mission for Sustainable Development. The programme hoped to rope in 500 companies to take up voluntary efforts for eco-protection.
