Economy Government - Politics States - Tamil Nadu TN: Bandh hits annual account closing of units G Gurumurthy
Coimbatore March 31 The Tamil Nadu Government-sponsored one-day bandh on Saturday may have given an extra day off this weekend for many. But the bandh, called on a day that also coincided with the annual closing of accounts by the trade and industry, did play spoilsport for some business houses here, robbing the charm off their year-end account closing. It is particularly so for those firms that are to reckon with stock closing and transport- dependent stock dispatches to be undertaken the same day, to beat the March 31 deadline. "We are unable to complete the scheduled annual stock-taking as the raw materials/accessories for the foundry industry being dealt by our firm could not be reached due to suspension of transportation in view of the bandh. We will now be doing the stock closing only tomorrow, despite it being Sunday," said Mr M.I. Benedict Raj, Chief Executive of Best Marketing Company, a foundry consumable firm in the city. The dilemma for Mr Raj in postponing the job is that the old stocks would get reflected in the books meant for tomorrow, the first day of the new financial year. The clash of bandh day with the last working day of the financial year is not unique to Mr Raj. Many trade and business houses, though caught by the sudden decision of the Tamil Nadu Government to announce the bandh, have sought to reschedule their working by advancing/postponing the task by a day or two.
Wage disbursement hit
The bandh call has put the spoke, to some extent, into the weekly wage disbursement for staff and workers of hosiery units in Tirupur, where the majority are paid their weekly wages only on Saturdays. Some garment units capable of managing the contingencies were able to settle payment to their men immediately after the night shift on Friday as these units had summoned the extra shift Friday evening itself to compensate Saturday's closure of the units for the bandh. Many hosiery units have decided to pay workers' salaries on Sunday when they would compensate a day lost towards the bandh. Most private industries, including many textile units in and around Coimbatore, maintained their normal operation on Saturday, though the bandh has hit public transportation with buses and lorries going off the road.
