2006 tea import bill up Rs 21 cr

P.S. Sundar

Coonoor April 2 The country's tea import bill in 2006 rose by Rs 21 crore over 2005 as more volume was imported in the context of the falling unit price.

An analysis of the information available with the Tea Board shows that in 2006, the c.i.f value of the imports rose to Rs 120 crore from Rs 99 crore in the previous calendar.

The volume increased to 2.4 crore kg from 1.7 crore kg because teas could be imported for a cheaper average price of Rs 50.03 a kg against Rs 58.79. The advantage of a drop in global price was neutralised by a higher import bill.

Highest volume

The highest volume of 1.2 crore kg came from Vietnam at an average price of Rs 34.23 a kg. The import bill totalled Rs 40.9 crore. That means nearly 34 per cent of the total import bill came from Vietnam. In 2005, only 3.2 million kg (mkg) had been imported from this country. The average price had fallen to Rs 34.23 a kg from Rs 36.90.

The second highest volume of 3.4 mkg came from Nepal.

India imported 2.5 mkg at an average price of Rs 90.73 a kg incurring an import bill of Rs 22.3 crore from Kenya against 3.1 mkg at Rs 77.58 a kg to reach Rs 24.6 crore.

A negligible volume of teas from South Korea at a whopping price of Rs 567.67 a kg — the highest price for the year — was imported. A volume of 7,000 kg from Germany at an average price of Rs 244.19 a kg showed the second highest import price. A volume of 1.4 lakh kg was imported from the UK paying an average price of Rs 199.93. A volume of 1.8 lakh kgfrom Sri Lanka at an average price of Rs 137.02 a kg was also imported. Teas were imported from Switzerland and Turkey also paying over Rs 130 a kg.
