CSIR renames 5 Regional Research Labs

Vinson Kurian

Thiruvananthapuram April 4 The Governing Body of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has renamed all its five Regional Research Laboratories (RRLs) to enable them to reflect a futuristic outlook.

The changed profiles of the laboratories with respect to their direction of growth, orientation of expertise and accumulated excellence have all been weighed in while re-christening them, a spokesman for the CSIR said here. The name change is effective from March 6 this year.

NEW NAMES

RRL-Bhopal has been renamed as Advanced Materials and Processes Research Institute (AMPRI); RRL-Bhubaneswar as Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT); and RRL-Jammu as Indian Institute of Integrative Medicine (IIIM).

RRL-Jorhat will now be known the North - East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST) and RRL-Thiruvananthapuram, National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST).

CSIR is a premier autonomous R&D organisation with its 38 laboratories and 47 regional centres. It undertakes research and development activities covering the entire canvas of science and technology in the civilian sector.

Constituted in 1942 by a resolution of the then Central Legislative Assembly, it aims to provide industrial competitiveness, social welfare, strong science and technology base for strategic sectors and advancement of fundamental knowledge.

RRL-T is located at Industrial Estate at Pappanamcode near here. Currently headed by Prof T. K. Chandrasekhar, the Lab is working as a multi-disciplinary research and development laboratory actively engaged in both basic and applied research even as it seeks to satisfy the regional needs in agro products, materials and energy, which goes to explain its new nomenclature.
