TRAI meet on CAS today

Our Bureau

New Delhi, April 4

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India will be meeting with stakeholders of the Conditional Access System (CAS) on Thursday to discuss further roll out of the CAS in the metros. CAS, which had been implemented in Chennai since 2003, was introduced in Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai on the last day of 2006.

In view of the sudden demand, and a shortage of set top boxes and hassled consumers soon after the last implementation of CAS, the authority has decided to make sure that it is more easily implemented in future. While TRAI is exploring the option of allowing operators to offer the system in non-notified areas, the Information and Broadcasting Ministry is reviewing the existing situation before it decides on the roadmap for CAS.
