Education Industry & Economy - Rural Development `No literate member in 26% of rural households' Our Bureau
New Delhi April 7 In about 26 per cent of the rural households and eight per cent of urban households, there is not a single member of age 15 years or above who could read and write a simple message with understanding, according to a National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO). About 73 per cent of the households in the country are rural which account for about 75 per cent of the population. Almost half of the rural households and about 20 per cent of urban households had no literate among the female members of age 15 years and above, according to a report by the organisation which is based on employment-unemployment data of the NSS 61st round. Among the major States, the proportion of households with no literates among the members of age 15 years and above was found to be the lowest in Kerala at three per cent and highest in Bihar at 38 per cent in the rural areas. In the urban areas, it was said to be the lowest again in Kerala at one per cent and highest in Rajasthan at 16 per cent.
