Make service recipient liable for service tax on rent: ICAI

Our Bureau

New Delhi April 7 The Government should shift the onus of payment of service tax on renting of immovable property to the service recipient, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has suggested.

This year's Budget had proposed introduction of service tax on renting of immovable property for commercial purposes. The responsibility of payment of service tax lies upon the service provider, unless otherwise specified.

The ICAI was of the view that a commercial establishment, as a service recipient, would be better placed to fulfil the statutory obligations compared with a service provider, who may be "old individuals" also.
