Lottery ban will not be revoked: Kumaraswamy

Our Bureau

Bantwal (D.K. Dt) April 8 The Karnataka Government will not revoke ban on lotteries whatever the case may be, according to the Chief Minister, Mr H.D. Kumaraswamy.

In an informal chat with presspersons on the sidelines of the valedictory of 27th annual `kisan mela,' organised by the Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala Rural Development Project (SKDRDP) at Bantwal in Dakshina Kannada district recently, he said: "We will not go back on the issue of lottery ban." The State Government imposed ban on lotteries from April 1.

To a query on the plight of those who lost jobs due to lottery ban, he said he has to look at the condition of 5.5 crore people of the state. Of these people, a considerable number were addicted to various forms of lotteries.

The Government will soon decide on rehabilitating those who lost jobs due to lottery ban, he said.

The Government took decision on banning lotteries, as there was pressure from women self-help groups on imposing ban on lotteries and arrack, he said.

When his attention was drawn towards a resolution taken at the `kisan mela' where it was decided to oppose the plans to divert Nethravathi River, Mr Kumaraswamy said it looked like a right decision. He would consult the technical experts on this issue.

Considerable amount of water, which is joining the sea, should be used effectively for agriculture purpose, he said.

ARECANUT PRODUCTS

Releasing the value-added arecanut products - `Pooga Trim' and `Pooga Syrup' — on the occasion, Mr Bandeppa Kashampur, Agriculture Minister, said that more value-added agriculture products like `Pooga Trim' and `Pooga Syrup' should come into use in Ayurveda.

Stating that the Karnataka Government has given priority for `lab-to-land' concept, he said: "We want to take technology to smallest of farmers." In the recent years, many farmers in Bidar have taken up cultivation of pomegranate.
