Untraded stocks

This is with reference to "LIC has Rs 342 crore locked in untraded stocks" (Business Line, March 21). This is one of the risks of exposure to stock market by institutions such as the LIC. Mutual funds are no exception. But in the case of LIC, investments in equities should have been done after a thorough examination of all aspects of the companies' performance by experts in the line. Such idle investments by retail investors are a cause for concern. SEBI should examine the issue of un-traded shares — as to how the investors can at least recover the amount of investment minus loss or plus gain, if any, at any point of time, as in most cases, dividends are not received for long periods and the investments remain blocked.
