Human Resources Government - Security IAF will release pilots for Air India Our Bureau
New Delhi April 9 The Indian Air Force is to release its pilots for taking up civilian flying jobs with Air India in a phased manner, the newly appointed Chief of Air Staff, Air Chief Mr Fali Homi Major, said on Monday. "We have signed a memorandum of understanding with Air India and will be releasing 15-to-20 pilots to be absorbed by the airline," the Air Chief said at a press conference. The pilots will, however, not be allowed to join private airlines. The move will help Air India, which currently has 615 pilots and estimates that it would require at least another 100 pilots annually for the next seven years. The airline has been taking foreign pilots on short-term contract basis to overcome the problem. Before joining Air India, the Air Force pilots will have to undergo a conversion programme. The exact number of pilots to be released by the IAF would depend on the numbers available and could go as high as 30-40 pilots a year, officials said.
