Kolkata April 10 Raw Materials Division of SAIL has recorded best ever production and despatch of iron ore in 2006-07. During the year, RMD's total iron ore production and despatch stood at 17.06 million tonne (mt) and 16.26 mt, respectively, a Press release said. The division's iron ore mines at Kiriburu, Bolani and Meghahatuburu achieved the best ever production striking a growth of 6.8 per cent, 3.4 per cent and 2.8 per cent, respectively, over the previous year. Chiria mines recorded an impressive growth of 38.7 per cent followed by 13.3 per cent of Barsua.
Meeting requirements
RMD mines have planned to produce 19.08 mt of iron ore in 2007-08, which is 12 per cent higher than previous year, to meet the entire requirement of SAIL's eastern sector's steel plant i.e. BSL, RSP, DSP & ISP, and partial requirement of Bhilai Steel Plant. The balance requirement of BSP will be fulfilled by Bhilai group of mines. To ensure availability of iron ore during the coming years, various mine development projects have been undertaken by the division, which include expansion of Bolani to 5 million tonnes of crude annually (mtpa). Expansion of loading capacity is in progress. Bolani has a proven reserve of about 154 mt. Apart from Bolani, development of the central block at Meghahatuburu to produce 4.3 mtpa by 2007-08, and south block at Kiriburu to produce 4.25 mtpa by 2008-09 have also been taken up as the existing reserve of both the mines is depleting fast. Plans are also on the anvil to develop and mechanise the Chiria mine to produce 7 mtpa by 2010-11, adds the press release.
