MR R.S. SHARMA
New Delhi April 12 The race for the top job of ONGC has begun once again, with eight shortlisted candidates said to be in the fray, including acting Chairman and Managing Director, Mr R.S. Sharma. The fresh hunt for a person to head ONGC began after the Appointments Committee of Cabinet returned the earlier panel of names suggested by the Public Enterprise Selection Board, stating that the "zone of consideration for the selection of the CMD should include persons from outside the public sector undertakings," to have a wider choice. The frontrunner for the post is Mr R.S. Sharma, who has been officiating as CMD since May 2006. Over 50 applications were received for the job. They include Mr Najeeb Jung, former Joint Secretary (Exploration) in the Petroleum Ministry who is now serving as Director of Energy Research in the Reliance Industries-funded Observer Research Foundation. Mr M.R. Hingnikar, Director (HR) of GAIL (India) Ltd, is also tipped to be in the fray. The search committee set up to pick the chief is expected to meet on April 17 to decide on holding interviews.
