SW Rly records 12% growth in freight loading

Hubli division contributes major chunk

Mangalore April 16 The Hubli-headquartered South Western Railway (SWR) has recorded an originating freight loading of 42.61 million tonnes during 2006-07 as against 38.03 mt during 2005-06, registering a growth of 12 per cent. The total originating freight earnings stood at Rs 2,640.95 crore (Rs 2,056.75 crore), recording a growth of 28.4 per cent.

A press release said here that SWR wants to achieve freight loading of 48.5 mt during the current financial year.

The SWR zone consists of three divisions - Hubli, Bangalore and Mysore.

The Hubli division has contributed a major chunk to the originating freight loading of the zone. The originating loading of the Hubli division stood at 37.21 mt (33.37 mt). Iron ore, coal and fertilisers contributed a considerable amount to the total freight loading.

During the last fiscal, the Hubli division earned an originating freight earning of Rs 2,213.73 crore (Rs 1,701.79 crore). The number of originating passengers in SWR zone was 108.51 million (96.1 million). The zone is planning to carry 119.3 million of passengers during the current fiscal.

New Line

During the current fiscal, the SWR has plans to lay 46 km of new line. This includes 14 km on Bangalore-Nelamangala section and 32 km on Kottur-Harpanhalli section.

Plans are also there to take up 210 km of gauge conversion and 114 km of track doubling work on various sections in the zone. An amount of Rs 245 crore has been earmarked for gauge conversion and Rs 93.60 crore for track doubling work.
