Hyderabad April 17 Andhra Pradesh, one of the six high HIV prevalence States in the country, is mulling to bring in legislation, mandating brides and bridegrooms to undergo HIV/AIDS screening before marriage.

Addressing a gathering after launching the $14-million Balasahyoga scheme here, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Minister, called for a debate on the issue of mandating the youth to undergo the AIDS test before they tied the nuptial knot.

The Balasahyoga scheme, being supported by the Children's Investment Fund Foundation and Elton John AIDS Foundation, is aimed at improving the quality of life of children infected and affected by HIV and AIDS.

It would cover 11 districts, reaching out to about 60,000 children. Besides, a consortium led by the India HIV/AIDS Alliance would cover the remaining 12 districts.
