Perot Systems to hire Indian docs, nurses

Our Bureau

Chennai April 17 Perot Systems Corporation, the $2.3 billion US-based information technology company, will hire Indian doctors and nurses to implement information technology solutions in hospitals in India and abroad. Disclosing this to newspersons, Mr Peter Altabef, President and CEO, Perot Systems, said the doctors would not practise medicine, but be involved in IT implementation in hospitals.

For example, doctors would help hospitals have the right kind of machines, he said. Out of the 22,000 global workforce in Perot Systems, 200 are doctors and around 600 people with medical background are working in the US and Australia.

IT Solutions

The recruitment of Indian doctors and nurses would begin soon and they would get training on technology, said Mr Altabef. Perot Systems would also enter the Indian market to provide IT solutions for `next generation' hospitals that would use IT to a large extent.

For instance, one area of IT implementation would be to have the history of patients by creating a large database. This database would help doctors understand thetreatment given in the past.

It would take 6-8 months for the company to get clients (hospitals) in India, which is a different market when compared with the US, UK or Australia.

Most of the new hospitals in India would deploy IT to a large extent and the company would target this segment, he said.

IT Adoption

The Indian healthcare industry is estimated to be around $30 billion and expected to reach around $50 billion in the next three to four years. However, adoption of IT was very low in hospitals.

In the contrary, Perot Systems has implemented IT solutions in around 500 hospitals, he said. Perot Systems provides consulting, business process, and technology-based solutions for the healthcare industry. Half of its revenue comes from healthcare.

More than 8,000 healthcare associates worldwide provide "integrated, comprehensive business and technical services for all facets of the healthcare marketplace," says information in the company's Web site. The company's consultants include former clinicians, physicians, nurses, and administrators as well as experts in business processes and technology.

Employee Strength

Our customers include six of the top 25 US health systems, more than 620 healthcare providers and 130 health insurance organisations and six of the leading healthcare supply chain and retail pharmacy companies.

According to Mr Altabef, the company increased its employee strength by 22 per cent in India to around 7,000. Globally it has 22,000 people. Perot Systems has started a new centre in Coimbatore — fourth in India. It currently employs around 250 and plans to double the number by the year-end in Coimbatore, he said.

The company is also looking at entering the Indian travel and hospitality sector, he said.
