`North-East SMEs facing erratic power supply'
Our Bureau
New Delhi
April 18
The small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the North-East receive power only for about 16-18 days in a month against the officially allotted 25 days in a month, according to a Confederation of Indian Industry survey on the SME sector.
Power supply is arbitrary and without any information to the consumers. This results in heavy loss of production and deterioration of machines used by the SMEs due to sudden shutdown and spikes in the voltage. In addition to this, unscheduled power cuts and irregular supply of power affects the full working of SMEs units.
In certain cases, officers of the electricity department visit SMEs and impose fines on the basis of connected load and not actual load. Lack of proper information on power shedding, arbitrary imposition of penalties and poor maintenance of electricity department offices add to the woes of the consumers, says the survey.
The chamber has suggested that group captive units with multiple benefits such as cogeneration of steam and electricity for running captive power plants could offer solutions to meet the power requirements.
