Adds two more nodes taking the total global network nodes to 7 in country

AT&T recorded 40 per cent growth last year in India and is expecting similar growth rate to continue for the next two years.

MR SANJIV BHAGAT

New Delhi April 18 International carrier AT&T Global Network Services India will start providing Internet services to the corporate enterprise sector by the end of this year.

The company, which had, last week, commercially launched its international long distance services, is also ramping up its network by adding two more nodes, taking the total number of global network nodes to seven in the country.

AT&T is also doubling the capacity of its existing two nodes at Bangalore and Mumbai, said Mr Sanjiv Bhagat, CEO and Managing Director, AT&T India.

AT&T recorded 40 per cent growth last year in India and is expecting a similar growth rate for the next two years. It currently provides its services to over 300 business customers in the country.

ILD operator

AT&T Global Network Services India is a joint venture between the US based AT&T Inc and Mahindra Telecommunications Investment Private Ltd. AT&T holds 74 per cent stake in the company and was the first foreign ILD operator in India.

Mr V.S. Gopinath, the recently appointed Vice-President of AT&T Asia Pacific, said, "India is a high-priority market for just about every global MNC, and the increasingly competitive telecom landscape will be a major factor in helping to attract further MNC investment and expansion into India. AT&T is strongly positioned in India to directly meet their telecommunication needs."

AT&T, however, will not offer services to retail consumers and will focus on the enterprise segment.

Indian ILD segment is hotting up with over 11 companies in the fray.

The UK based BT has also taken a licence to offer data and voice services in India. Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications and Tata-managed VSNL are the major Indian ILD operators.

A number of Internet service providers including Sify have also taken ILD licence in order to offer international leased line services.
