Truck accidents

While there can be no two opinions about the rising trend of road accidents in the country, there are differences over the causes. According to some, the accidents are on the rise because trucks and buses do not observe lane discipline. According to others, accidents can occur even if the trucks and buses stick to their lanes but other vehicles do not. A third opinion is that the cause is the lack of formal education and training of drivers, so essential for driving on highways. There is yet a fourth theory that the low rate of fine for violation of traffic rules is the root cause of the rise in the number of accidents. No wonder, the Delhi High Court has ordered a hefty increase in fine and the Kerala Government the installation of speed governors in trucks. However, truckers' organisations wonder if such measures were not knee-jerk reactions to a problem that deserves a more serious and careful attention.
