Kolkata April 28 The first two-wheeler manufactured in West Bengal was rolled out here on Saturday by the Xenitis Group in the presence of the West Bengal Chief Minister, Mr Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, and a host of dignitaries representing industry in China and Singapore. Named "Xpression", the motorcycle variant is manufactured in Hooghly district. The first two-wheeler unit has come up in technical collaboration with Guangzhou Motors Company of China. Guangzhou Motors is among China's largest automobile makers and is an original equipment manufacturer for Toyota Motors and Honda. Speaking on the occasion, Mr Santanu Ghosh, Chairman of Xenitis, said Xpression would be available in three variants of 100 cc, 125 cc and 150 cc. The company proposes to roll out motorcycles and scooters nationally within the next six months. Mr Ghosh said Xenitis also plans to set up a four-wheeler manufacturing facility in Hooghly in collaboration with Guangzhou Motors. A memorandum of understanding in this regard was signed here with the Chinese company. A bus and truck manufacturing facility is also proposed to be set up by 2008. He, however, declined to divulge any further details in this regard.
In addition, Xenitis has signed an agreement with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) for setting up automobile service points at 350 IOC retail outlets across West Bengal. The company also tied up arrangements for establishing manufacturing linkages with 24 PC manufacturers. Agreements with auto ancillaries were also signed for supply of components to the two-wheeler factory and the proposed four-wheeler manufacturing facility at Hooghly.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Bhattacharjee said the West Bengal Government was keen to facilitate speedy industrialisation of the state. Towards this end, it would be imperative to set up automobile manufacturing facilities, especially for making cars, buses and trucks.
