A Division Bench of the Calcutta High Court, comprising Chief Justice Mr S.S. Nijjar, and Mr Justice P.C. Ghose, on Wednesday adjourned the Nandigram related Public Interest Litigations matter till May 3.Several PILs have been filed condemning the alleged police atrocities at Nandigram, West Bengal, in connection with land acquisition for constructing a chemicals hub by the State Government. (The State Government has since dropped the plan for a chemicals hub at Nandigram.)
The Court had asked the Advocate-General of the State about the present status at Nandigram. The AG sought time to submit a report on the current position of Nandigram, hence the hearing was deferred till May 3. The same court adjourned the PIL relating to Singur issue till June 14, as the State Government is now required to file further affidavit. All the PILs have been moved challenging the process of land acquisition at Singur for the proposed small car manufacturing unit to be set up by the Tata Group. It was alleged that the State Government had not complied with the norms for acquiring the land at Singur.
