Our Bureau

Chennai May 2 O2 Asia Pacific and Middle East, a member of the Telefonica O2 Europe, is targeting a 35 per cent market share in India in the Windows Mobile PDA (personal digital assistant) handset this year, according to Mr Myilravanan Nathar, Country Manager (India), O2.

The market for Windows Mobile PDA, which has Microsoft operating systems, in India is estimated to be around two lakh units compared with 75,000 last year. Four players in this space are O2, Dopod, iMate and HP, he told newspersons.

Demand for Mobile PDAs was from corportaes, government and individuals looking for `high end' messaging and multimedia handsets.

There was a government tender asking for around 4,000 such PDAs to be provided to officials, he said.

According to Mr Nathar, this year, O2 plans to launch five more PDA mobiles, including a `high-performance' handset that would cost more than O2's Xda Atom Life (costing Rs 45,900-maximum retail price).

The company sells its handsets through Brightpoint India outlets in major Indian cities, he said.

O2 currently has three ranges of handsets in the country and would have seven by the year-end.
