Software States - Tamil Nadu TN software sector exports rise 47% Our Bureau
Chennai May 4 Tamil Nadu software industry reported a 47 per cent increase in exports in 2006-07 and is close to reaching a total employee base of two lakh. Revenue nearly doubled in the last two years to Rs 20,701 crore in 2006-07 from Rs 10,730 crore in 2004-05. In 2005-06, the exports were Rs 14,115 crore. For fiscal ending March 2007, the industry had 1.95 lakh people, a 35 per cent increase over previous year's number of 1.45 lakh, according to data provided by the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), Chennai. Out of the Rs 20,701 crore, the units under STPI contributed Rs 19,813 crore and units under Madras Export Processing Zone and Special Economic Zone contributed Rs 618 crore. Seven companies contributed above Rs 1,000 crore, the data says.
STP Units
Hardware exports from 16 units increased by 42 per cent to Rs 398 crore (Rs 281 crore). During 2006-07, 162 new units registered under STPI, the data says. Out of the total exports, application software and system software contributed Rs 14,077 crore (68 per cent of total exports); IT - enabled services Rs 3,519 crore (17 per cent); communication software, VLSI design and Web solutions Rs 1,242 crore (6 per cent); product/packages Rs 1,656 crore (8 per cent) and consultancy Rs 207 crore (1 per cent), the data says. According to the data, the STP units occupied 25 million sq ft in 2006-07 compared with 20 million in the previous year. Further, 18 IT parks were approved under the STP scheme during 2006-07 and the total area developed by these parks was 11 million sq ft. Pondicherry contributed revenue of Rs 43.58 crore during 2006-07 (Rs 28.78 crore), a 51.42 per cent growth. The industry here employs around 1,600 people, the data says.
